Congratulations to the SPHS Varsity Volleyball team on winning the District championship. They also won their Regional Quarterfinal and made it to the Regional Semifinals. Their record was 23-6. (more…)
Senior Richard Kast took 4th place in the 16-19 age group in the USAT Long Distance Triathlon National Championship this month at the Miami Man triathlon. The Long Course Triathlon entailed 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and a 13.1 mile run. Those are half-Ironman distances.
Richard’s success was especially noteworthy given the top three finishers were all 19 years old and there was no one else age 18 or 16 in the race.
He also qualified for Team USA! He received an invitation to go to Spain to participate in the world championship in May 2019.
Both her 100 butterfly time (57.98)–which broke the old school record of (58.7)–and her 500 freestyle time (5:04.09) qualified her to represent SPHS at the State Championship Meet! (more…)
The Green Devil Marching Band and Color Guard won numerous first place and other awards in four regional competitions this Fall season as described below.
This year the band was directed by Ms. Katie Aucremann, and the performance show was “1001 Nights,” the music of Scheherazade intended to evoke images from the Arabian Nights stories. You can enjoy their performance one more time (without the marching) at the band program’s Winter Concert in the school auditorium, Thursday December 13 at 7 p.m. (more…)
Senior Natalie Stiles, junior Layla Sumilang, and freshman Amber Aronson received All American Honors during the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) camp. “It is the highest honor a cheerleader can be given in high school,” said Varsity Cheerleading Coach Andrea Anderson.
Coach Anderson explained that All American candidates “are nominated by coaches and staff during camps for things like outstanding leadership and skills. They then ‘try out’ in front of the entire camp, and the UCA instructors judge their skills and abilities. If they make the cutoff score, they are named All American.” (more…)
Meredith Kiernan, IB senior and SPHS golfer, shot 2 over 73 to win the girls division of the Green Devil Invitational at the Vinoy Golf Club. She was featured in the Tampa Bay Times article “Hometeam Hotshots” on October 9, 2018.
These photos capture just a few moments of the huge commitment that JV football players make to the football program. IB freshmen Steele Shouppe (#85) and Reid Mouser (#83) are pictured during the September 13, 2018 game against Northeast High School.
Football practices start during the summer continue every weekday after school until 6:00 pm. JV games are scheduled on Thursday evenings from 7 pm until about 9:30 pm.

Mrs. Lane has been attending Pinellas School District Program Recruitment Fairs to share information about the SPHS IB program with prospective students and their parents. She has been assisted by Mrs. Derrickson and several SPHS IB students at the discovery nights and magnet information fairs. (more…)
The SPHS IB Booster Board is seeking volunteers who are interested in learning more about Advocate editor duties and eventually taking on the role. When our daughter graduates at the end of this school year, we will retire as co-editors of The Advocate.
It is a rewarding experience for those who like to edit, like to be involved, like to communicate, and who appreciate the benefits of sharing information. There also is a fun creative element of selecting pictures or clip art to highlight each article. It would be good for an editor(s) to be organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines that they set for themselves. (more…)

The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program awards $20,000 to 20 high school, college-bound seniors across the nation for being exemplary leaders on their sports teams, in their classrooms, and in their communities. The college scholarship, sponsored by the Foot Locker Foundation, is intended to help phenomenal student-athletes pursue their dreams of attending and excelling at a four-year college/university.
Applications are due on December 14, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. EST.
The Safety Harbor Rising Stars Award is for Pinellas County High School students (public, private, or homeschool). Students will be recognized for achievement, excellence, and community contribution in Academic Achievement, Literary Arts, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Science & Technology and Scholar Athlete. Deadline: December 28, 2018.

The Florida Student Financial Aid Application is required for Bright Futures. You can download the one-page flyer below (PDF) for instructions.
A new feature has been added to The Advocate: IB Guidance notices and announcements provided by Mrs. La’Tina Johnson, IB Guidance Counselor. Because many of these announcements are timely and affect all four grades–not just seniors–, you might start seeing more frequent Advocate snippets in your mailbox to keep you better informed.
The headline of each post will be tagged to identify which are from IB guidance, and the title will indicate if a post pertains to a subset of students. If a deadline exists, it will be mentioned in the title. Also, “IB Guidance” is a new menu item to make it easier to find and browse all of these posts at once. (more…)
All visits will be held in the Little Theatre during lunch or after school. All students are encouraged to attend. It is mandatory for IB Juniors to attend at least 4 college visits.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are four common mistakes made on Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) forms last period. FAFSA are prepared prospective college students (e.g, seniors applying for college) to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.
Graduating SPHS IB seniors participate in two graduation events in May: The schoolwide graduation procession, and the IB Senior Celebration. The Senior Celebration is an extensively-planned banquet that honors the graduating seniors. It typically is held in the historic Coliseum and includes awards, skits, speeches, and music. Our faculty and staff and families and guests of the seniors attend. Past pictures of the decorated venue are included below.
The IB Senior Celebration Committee invites parents of Underclassmen, Juniors, and Seniors to join us in planning the Senior Celebration. We meet once per month to party plan the event. (more…)

Winter guard is a competitive dance and color guard ensemble that performs throughout Tampa Bay. Practices will be Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning November 6.
