The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. We are proud to announce that two St. Petersburg High School students were named as National Merit Semifinalists. Congratulations to Catherine Lee and Alexandra Debure. Both are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. They will be eligible to compete for some 7500 scholarships valued at $32 million that will be offered next spring. (more…)
Vivienne Dumas (IB Junior) traveled to New York City to participate in the Art and Writing Scholastic Competition awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 6, 2018. Vivienne submitted 5 pieces, and all 5 where recognized. However, her pen drawing titled “Florida Girls” (pictured below) was a gold medal winner! (more…)
The annual IB Senior Celebration at the Coliseum on May 21 was a success with 492 guests attending, The celebration committee went all out to make this a special night for the seniors. Mr. Ryan Halstead served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and the class elected Sydney Jones and Miles Green as Senior Speakers. (more…)
At a Kiwanis Club luncheon at Orange Blossom Catering in May 2018, seniors Caolifhinn McCormack and Maya Thompson received Al Muter Scholarship awards. Jamia Washington (’17) was selected for this last year. She attended the luncheon this year and spoke to the group and appears in the photo with Caolifhinn and Maya. (more…)
Congratulations to the IB students who represented SPHS as both 1st Place Winners and 1st Runners Up at the April 25th Great Debate sponsored by the Clearwater Bar Association. This event was a follow-up to the preliminary Great Debate that occurred in April 20 and reported here.
This is the fifth year in a row that SPHS has won the Fogle Trophy, which is like the Stanley Cup of Debate. All the students won cash prizes and plaques. The winning team has a newly engraved plaque on the Fogle Trophy. (more…)
Congratulations to IB sophomores Sophia Hirst and Sophia Vesely for winning awards in the very competitive state-level National History Day (NHD) event held in Tallahassee on May 8. Sophia Hirst won 2nd place in the Research Paper division and Sophia Vesely placed 3rd in the Individual Website division.
Angeline Friel was awarded first place in the 2018 Mayor’s Youth Showcase of Achievement held on May 17, 2018. This annual event highlights Pinellas County’s most talented students at the Mahaffey Theater with performances, accolades, visuals, and awards given for eight different categories. (more…)
The annual Band Banquet on May 4, 2018, commemorated this year’s marching band season and concert band performances. At the banquet, Mr. Cameron Vaadi, Director of Bands, said farewell to the SPHS band community. He is leaving SPHS and will start advanced graduate studies in French Horn performance at the University of Florida next Fall.
At the annual Awards Ceremony, there is both an award and a scholarship provided in memory of former IB student, Emily Lester: the Emily Lester Memorial Scholarship, awarded to an IB senior, and the Emily Lester Award, awarded to one or two IB freshmen.
At this year’s May 11 Awards Ceremony, IB senior Caolifhinn McCormack won the Emily Lester Memorial Scholarship. Tricia Previtera Lester, Emily Lester’s mother, presented the scholarship to Caolifhinn and was unaware that Caolifhinn had been the 9th grade winner of the Emily Lester Award. This was the first time a student had won both awards!
The family story gets better: Caolifhinn’s younger brother, IB freshman Shane McCormack, was one of the two winners of the Emily Lester Award this year too! (Hannah Arthur was the other freshman winner.) (more…)
Pam Benton, Pinellas County’s PreK-12 World Languages Specialist, recognized teachers and student participants in the 2018 World Languages Showcase held on April 23. She wrote, “We enjoyed everything from French skits and poetry declamations to an explanation of mate tea and its origins. A highlight of the evening was “What I’ve Learned” from the students at Morgan Fitzgerald, and St. Petersburg High School students explaining their projects in fluent Spanish.” (more…)

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 PSAT Qualifying Test. The nationwide pool of 16,000 Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of US high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

The September 2017 Students of the Month were Cade Wenzel, nominated by Ms. Nancy Fanning, and IB Student Claudia Johnson, nominated by Ms. Karyn Tash.
On October 9 2017 Zachary Tetreault earned the highest honor in scouting, the rank of Eagle Scout with Gold Palm distinction. He is a senior in the IB Program.
To earn the rank of Eagle Scout, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges and demonstrate leadership and community service by planning, organizing and carrying out an Eagle project that benefits the community. Zachary also earned the Eagle Gold Palm for merit badges. (more…)

The SPHS Debate Team traveled with sponsor Ms. Broughton to Lakewood Ranch High School in November 2017 and then in December 2017 to Newsome High School. They competed well in both events and brought home the following trophies and awards. (more…)
