The annual IB Senior Celebration banquet at the Coliseum on May 20 was a success with 499 guests attending. The celebration committee went all out to make this a special night for the seniors. SPHS Jazz Band entertained guests as they arrived. The event’s photographer took family and individual photos, and guests perused IB memorabilia such as program scrapbooks and photos of seniors’ alumni family members. (more…)
In April, the St. Petersburg High School Varsity Ethics Bowl team traveled to the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill to compete in the National High School Ethics Bowl. There were 24 schools and 22 states represented.
Our team fought valiantly and won 3rd place in the national competition, bringing home $2,500!! Congratulations to our National Ethics Bowl winners, all IB students: Camille Luong, Arielle Noah, Jack McKyton, Victor Xie and Kasha Tyranski.
After returning from a serious knee injury that sidelined her last year, IB senior Angeline Friel co-captained the varsity girls’ soccer team during their 2018-19 season. The Lady Green Devils won a District Championship, Regional Championship and a spot in the State Final Four. Angeline’s leadership played a critical role in turning the team into a cohesive squad and she received the SPHS Female Athlete of the Year
Three St. Petersburg students will represent the city of St. Petersburg as student ambassadors to Takamatsu, Japan, during a cultural exchange visit July 1-11. SPHS IB juniors Layla Sumilang and Eleanor Anderson (pictured) and Taylor Johnson of St. Petersburg Collegiate High School were chosen by St. Petersburg’s Sister Cities Committee in April 2019. In February 2019, SPHS Traditional student Tyler Barnett and IB junior Rachel Bean (pictured here with Principal Lebo) were named PTSA Students of the Month sponsored by the Historic Kenwood Association.
IB junior Simone Till was one of four Tampa Bay Area students to receive the Bank of America (BOA) Leadership Award for the summer. The Bank of America Student Leaders program annually helps to connect 225 community-minded high school juniors and seniors to employment, skills development (e.g. in personal finance) and service. Congratulations to our SPHS Varsity Ethics Bowl team for winning the Regional Championship in February! The Ethics Bowl is a form of debate, and our team debated the issues virtually over Skype in the Media Center. They went up against the same team that defeated them last year (James River High School in Virginia), this time sweeping all 3 judges to win.
The entire Varsity team is made up of these smart, dedicated and hard-working IB students: Arielle Noah, Camille Luong, Kasha Tyranski, Victor Xie, Jack McKyton, Tiffany Zhou, Hubert Pugzlys, and Lydia Silverstone.

The first competition, a juried exhibit at the Dali Museum, is the Student Surrealist Art Exhibit 2019. Paris’s watercolor piece was inspired by the theme “Waking Dreams”. It is on display in the Raymond James Room at the Dali Museum until March 2, 2019. (more…)
The Sunshine Chapter of the National Honor Society at St. Petersburg High School inducted 138 initiates at a Candlelight Ceremony on October 29, 2018 in the Auditorium.
The ceremony included welcoming comments, a candlelight procession, induction of Honorary Faculty Ms. Laura Domanski (IB program) and Mrs. Jenny Trewin (Ttraditional program), induction of the initiates, and investiture of typical initiates. (more…)
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. We are proud to announce that two St. Petersburg High School students were named as National Merit Semifinalists. Congratulations to Catherine Lee and Alexandra Debure. Both are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. They will be eligible to compete for some 7500 scholarships valued at $32 million that will be offered next spring. (more…)
Vivienne Dumas (IB Junior) traveled to New York City to participate in the Art and Writing Scholastic Competition awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall on June 6, 2018. Vivienne submitted 5 pieces, and all 5 where recognized. However, her pen drawing titled “Florida Girls” (pictured below) was a gold medal winner! (more…)

At a Kiwanis Club luncheon at Orange Blossom Catering in May 2018, seniors Caolifhinn McCormack and Maya Thompson received Al Muter Scholarship awards. Jamia Washington (’17) was selected for this last year. She attended the luncheon this year and spoke to the group and appears in the photo with Caolifhinn and Maya. (more…)
Congratulations to the IB students who represented SPHS as both 1st Place Winners and 1st Runners Up at the April 25th Great Debate sponsored by the Clearwater Bar Association. This event was a follow-up to the preliminary Great Debate that occurred in April 20 and reported here.
This is the fifth year in a row that SPHS has won the Fogle Trophy, which is like the Stanley Cup of Debate. All the students won cash prizes and plaques. The winning team has a newly engraved plaque on the Fogle Trophy. (more…)
Congratulations to IB sophomores Sophia Hirst and Sophia Vesely for winning awards in the very competitive state-level National History Day (NHD) event held in Tallahassee on May 8. Sophia Hirst won 2nd place in the Research Paper division and Sophia Vesely placed 3rd in the Individual Website division.
Angeline Friel was awarded first place in the 2018 Mayor’s Youth Showcase of Achievement held on May 17, 2018. This annual event highlights Pinellas County’s most talented students at the Mahaffey Theater with performances, accolades, visuals, and awards given for eight different categories. (more…)
The annual Band Banquet on May 4, 2018, commemorated this year’s marching band season and concert band performances. At the banquet, Mr. Cameron Vaadi, Director of Bands, said farewell to the SPHS band community. He is leaving SPHS and will start advanced graduate studies in French Horn performance at the University of Florida next Fall.
At the annual Awards Ceremony, there is both an award and a scholarship provided in memory of former IB student, Emily Lester: the Emily Lester Memorial Scholarship, awarded to an IB senior, and the Emily Lester Award, awarded to one or two IB freshmen.
At this year’s May 11 Awards Ceremony, IB senior Caolifhinn McCormack won the Emily Lester Memorial Scholarship. Tricia Previtera Lester, Emily Lester’s mother, presented the scholarship to Caolifhinn and was unaware that Caolifhinn had been the 9th grade winner of the Emily Lester Award. This was the first time a student had won both awards!
The family story gets better: Caolifhinn’s younger brother, IB freshman Shane McCormack, was one of the two winners of the Emily Lester Award this year too! (Hannah Arthur was the other freshman winner.) (more…)
Pam Benton, Pinellas County’s PreK-12 World Languages Specialist, recognized teachers and student participants in the 2018 World Languages Showcase held on April 23. She wrote, “We enjoyed everything from French skits and poetry declamations to an explanation of mate tea and its origins. A highlight of the evening was “What I’ve Learned” from the students at Morgan Fitzgerald, and St. Petersburg High School students explaining their projects in fluent Spanish.” (more…)
