The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. We are proud to announce that two St. Petersburg High School students were named as National Merit Semifinalists. Congratulations to Catherine Lee and Alexandra Debure. Both are enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program. They will be eligible to compete for some 7500 scholarships valued at $32 million that will be offered next spring.
Over 1.6 million juniors in about 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to advance to Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship.
We wish Catherine and Alex continued success in their academic pursuits.
