After returning from a serious knee injury that sidelined her last year, IB senior Angeline Friel co-captained the varsity girls’ soccer team during their 2018-19 season. The Lady Green Devils won a District Championship, Regional Championship and a spot in the State Final Four. Angeline’s leadership played a critical role in turning the team into a cohesive squad and she received the SPHS Female Athlete of the Year
Making it to this level was an amazing accomplishment for the girls’ soccer team. Everyone anticipated a re-building year after losing 8 impactful players from the previous year. With only 3 seniors in the starting line-up and 6 new freshmen players, the team had to gel quickly.
A crowning moment in the rebuilding effort was the team’s victory over Venice High School (projected to win the State Championship) in the Regional Finals after two overtimes and penalty kicks!
Coach Rui Farias presented Angeline with the Most Valuable Player award at the end of year soccer banquet, and she received the SPHS Female Athlete of the Year at the Awards Night held in the auditorium on May 1, 2019. She enjoyed every minute of soccer at SPHS but is most proud of making it through the International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
On January 25, 2019, Angeline signed her NCAA Letter of Intent to play Division 1 Soccer at Northeastern University in Boston, where she will pursue a degree from the D’Amore-McKim School of Business.
