Congratulations to IB sophomores Sophia Hirst and Sophia Vesely for winning awards in the very competitive state-level National History Day (NHD) event held in Tallahassee on May 8. Sophia Hirst won 2nd place in the Research Paper division and Sophia Vesely placed 3rd in the Individual Website division.
By placing 2nd, Sophia Hirst will advance to the national competition which will be held at the University of Maryland this summer. Sophia’s paper was Together Let Us Explore the Stars: Collaboration in Space Exploration During the Cold War.
By placing 3rd in her division, Sophia Vesely qualified as an alternate for the national competition. Sophia’s website was Mistress Cheng I Sao: The Ruthless Pirate that Ruled the South China Sea.
They advanced to the state competition after doing well at the county level as mentioned in this post.
Mr. Rader commented, “Florida has one of the largest (if not the largest) most fierce History Day competitions in the entire country. For any of our kids to make it to nationals from Florida is quite an accomplishment.”
